Looking at the cases of mob violence across the country, the Mamta Banerjee government of West Bengal is enacting a new law on mob violence. Today this bill has been introduced in the Bengal Legislative Assembly. The bill introduced in the Legislative Assembly proposes strict provisions against mob violence. Under the new provision, a maximum punishment of life imprisonment has been made for those who provoke the mob. West Bengal has become the second state after Rajasthan to enact a law on mob violence.
Under this law there is a provision of punishment for those who plot mob violence. There is also a provision for punishment for those who indulge in mob violence. The bill proposes to impose a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and fine from Rs one lakh to Rs five lakh. According to the draft bill, mob violence has been described as mob violence on the basis of religion, caste, sex, place of birth, language, dietary behavior, ethnicity or any other basis.
