Fugitive diamond trader Nirav Modi, wanted in a 13,000 crore ($ 2 billion) fraud and money laundering case with Punjab National Bank, will appear in a UK court on Thursday. Modi, lodged in a London jail, will appear before the court for a regular hearing of custody. It is believed that Modi, appearing in a Westminster court in the extradition case, will get a due date for his trial. The trial is expected to begin in May next year.

Judge Tan Ikram had said on the last appearance hearing i.e. August 22 that there was no progress today. He instructed the court clerk to confirm the date of May 11, 2020 to begin the proposed five-day extradition hearing.

A case of management hearing may also go on in the case before the extradition trial in February next year. Scotland Yard arrested Nirav Modi in March on Indian government charges and has since been lodged in Wandsworth Jail in south west London.
